Dr. Scott Cowan graduated from Brown University in 1982. He completed his medical degree at the Boston University School of Medicine and then trained in orthopedic surgery there through 1993. He completed his training with a fellowship in spinal surgery at the New England Baptist Hospital in 1994. He remains a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and is a member of the North American Spine Society, as well as the New England Spine Study Group and the Mass Medical Society.

Dr. Cowan maintains academic appointments at the Boston University School of Medicine along with the Tufts University School of Medicine. He has served on multiple hospital committees at Baystate Medical Center, including surgical quality improvement committee, the spine performance improvement committee, and the spine model of care committee. His duties with the North American Spine Society include work with the evidence-based guidelines committee and the coverage committee.

Dr. Cowan is a partner at New England Orthopedic Surgeons and has practiced there for the last 25 years. He has staff appointments at Baystate Medical Center and the Shriners Hospital for Children. Dr. Cowan is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery since 1996 and was recertified most recently in 2016.

Dr. Cowan has given multiple presentations across the country and has multiple publications on spine care. He serves as a trustee at the Williston Northampton School and is on the board at Health New England. Dr. Cowan enjoys racquet sports, fishing, and hiking with his family.
